WRFT Newsletter February 2025 published

Herring spawned to west of Aultgrishan in March 2024; will they spawn again nearby in 2025?

The latest newsletter provides a summary of Trust activity and some related stories from October 2024 to early February 2025 and can be found herehttps://www.wrft.org.uk/files/WRFT%20Newsletter%20February%202025.pdf

The newsletter introduces the salmon stream nutrition restoration project, supported by the Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation, a pilot project which aims to reverse the downward spiral of nutrient depletion and declining salmon numbers by placing ‘salmon carcass analogue pellets’ into stream beds to support juvenile salmon growth.  Juvenile fish and aquatic invertebrates are being surveyed to assess outcomes and to assess stream health. Thankyou also to Hendrix-Genetics and Nature Scot Beinn Eighe NNR field centre for support.

There are also links to salmon farm Environment Management Plan [EMP] wild fish monitoring reports for 2024, and a report about ongoing monitoring of the sea around Wester Ross for signs of herring spawning, supported by the West of Scotland Herring Hunt

Thank you to all our helpers and to estates and supporters for enabling much work to be undertaken.

Please contact the Trust if interested in supporting any of our work, membership and / or participating in forthcoming activities.
