Algal bloom in Loch Tollie (James Butler)

Algal bloom in Loch Tollie (James Butler)

In contrast to other areas of Scotland, discharges of domestic effluent are not major causes of concern in Wester Ross. However, dense phytoplankton blooms associated with enrichment were recorded in some freshwater lochs with active salmon farms. Loch Damh is currently the only loch in Wester Ross with active salmon smolt production cages. The loch is noted for producing large trout and charr, and large salmon smolts have been recorded leaving the system by FRS scientists.
