Trout scale catalogue

Pictures of anaethetised sea trout and brown trout and their scales from around Wester Ross. All fish were returned to the water after photos had been taken.

• Ferox trout 700m Loch Maree 25 October 2011
  This is one of the largest trout recorded in the River Ewe - Loch Maree systems in the past 10 years. It was temporarily removed from a spawning stream. Scale reading suggests it is a 'ferox' trout with growth rate that increased when aged 7 or 8 as its diet changed.  Posted: 10/11/2011 (425KB)
• Sea trout 482mm Gairloch 4th August 2011, with over 200 lice.
  This fish was heavily infected with parasitic Lepeophtheirus salmonis sea lice (mostly preadult and adult lice) and Cryptocotyle lingua (Black spot).  Posted: 23/09/2011 (271KB)
• Sea trout 465mm Gairloch ?recaptured 4th August 2011
  From shape of healed dorsal fin and spot positions, this fish is judged to be the same sea trout that was caught on 18th February 2011 nearby. [Please contact WRFT biologist if you disagree!].  Posted: 05/08/2011 (379KB)
